The Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Prof. Ursula Ngozi Akanwa, has reiterated her administration's unwavering commitment to inclusive governance, transparency, and collaborative leadership, assuring members of staff that her office remains accessible to everyone with constructive ideas capable of advancing the University.
Prof. Akanwa gave the assurance during a Family Meeting with members of staff held at the Modern Public Lecture Theatre, where she addressed critical issues bordering on institutional growth, staff commitment, discipline, innovation, and sustainable development.
Speaking before staff drawn from various Colleges, Departments, Centres and Units of the University, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized that the progress of MOUAU cannot be achieved through the efforts of management alone. She noted that every member of staff, irrespective of rank or office, has a significant role to play in transforming the institution into a globally competitive centre of excellence.

She stressed that her administration operates an open-door policy that encourages meaningful engagement, constructive criticism, and innovative contributions from staff. According to her, good ideas can emerge from any office within the University, and such ideas should be freely shared for the collective advancement of the institution.
Prof. Akanwa urged staff members to embrace a stronger sense of responsibility and dedication to duty, emphasizing that professionalism, discipline, accountability, and teamwork remain indispensable values for achieving excellence. She encouraged staff to uphold the ethics of the civil service by being punctual, carrying out official assignments diligently, and respecting constituted authority at all levels.
The Vice-Chancellor further cautioned against unnecessary bureaucratic delays in the discharge of official responsibilities, reminding staff that every document entrusted to them represents an individual's future and deserves prompt attention.
"The document in front of any of us is someone's destiny that does not need to be delayed or treated with laxity," she stated.
She called on staff to develop a deep sense of ownership of the University by treating its affairs with sincerity, urgency, and commitment, noting that collective responsibility is essential for institutional success.
Speaking on the financial sustainability of the University, Prof. Akanwa challenged the various Colleges, Centres, Departments and other academic and administrative units to leverage their available resources, expertise, and unique strengths to develop innovative programmes and initiatives capable of generating additional internally generated revenue (IGR). She explained that strengthening the University's revenue base would enhance its capacity to provide quality teaching, research, infrastructure, and other essential services.
The Vice-Chancellor also commended members of staff for the cooperation, support, and goodwill they have consistently extended to her administration since assuming office. She acknowledged their sacrifices and contributions towards maintaining peace and stability within the University community.
Reaffirming her commitment to participatory leadership, Prof. Akanwa assured staff that management would continue to promote policies that encourage inclusiveness, accountability, and mutual respect while creating an enabling environment where both staff and students can thrive.
She expressed optimism that with sustained unity, innovation, discipline, and collective commitment, MOUAU will continue to strengthen its reputation as one of Nigeria's leading universities in agricultural education, research, innovation, and community development.
The Family Meeting provided an opportunity for management and staff to interact, exchange ideas, and discuss practical strategies aimed at accelerating the University's growth, improving service delivery, and positioning MOUAU for greater achievements in the years ahead.
