Nigeria on Monday took another step towards linking university research with industry as the Federal Government, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Abia State Government and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) officially launched the country's first Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod (Manu Tech UniPod) in Umudike, with leaders describing it as a major platform for innovation, enterprise and economic growth.
Delivering the keynote address on behalf of Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, said the facility marks a new direction for higher education in Nigeria. He said universities must move beyond awarding degrees to producing technologies, businesses and skilled entrepreneurs that can solve real problems.

According to him, Nigeria has no shortage of talent but needs stronger systems that can turn ideas into successful businesses. He added that locating the innovation hub in Abia connects academic research with one of the country's strongest manufacturing and enterprise centres.
Governor Alex Chioma Otti described the project as the result of purposeful collaboration between government and development partners. He said the Manu Tech UniPod fits into Abia's plan to become Nigeria's leading destination for enterprise, manufacturing and industrial development.
The governor said the facility would help unlock the creativity of the state's entrepreneurs and artisans while creating new opportunities for research, innovation, investment and job creation.
Speaking at the event, the United Nations Assistant Secretary General and Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa, Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa, said Africa's future depends on innovation driven by its young people. She said universities must become centres where ideas are transformed into products, businesses and industries capable of competing globally.
UNDP Nigeria Resident Representative, Ms. Elsie G. Attafuah, said the launch of the Manu Tech UniPod is part of a growing national innovation network that connects education, research, technology, manufacturing and investment. She said the initiative will help universities produce innovators, attract investment and create jobs while supporting Nigeria's industrial transformation.
In her welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of MOUAU, Prof Ursula Ngozi Akanwa, described the UniPod as more than a new facility. She said it represents a bridge between research and industry, agriculture and manufacturing, and innovation and enterprise.
Prof Akanwa said the university is committed to ensuring that ideas developed within its laboratories become products, businesses and industries that improve lives. She added that the success of the UniPod would be measured by the technologies commercialised, businesses created, jobs generated and partnerships built.
The event was attended by the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Architect Sonny Echono represented by Director of Research, TETFund, Dr. Suleiman Zangina; members of the Abia State House of Assembly, the Secretary to the Abia State Government, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Members of the Abia State Executive Council, traditional rulers, captains of industry, heads of tertiary institutions, development partners, young innovators, manufacturers, students and other distinguished guests.
