The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) Transport Services (MTS) has issued a formal rebuttal to claims made by the Students’ Union Government (SUG) regarding the alleged suspension of its operations on campus.

In a memo dated April 6, 2026, the leadership of the MOUAU Transport Services clarified that the SUG did not at any point direct or enforce the suspension of tricycle (keke) operations within the university.
According to the statement signed by Chairman Ekom Smith Bassey and Secretary Nwaeze Darlington, the reported halt in operations was not a union directive but rather a result of individual decisions made by operators.
The union explained that its members, who operate independently, have been significantly affected by rising operational costs, including the price of Premium Motor Spirit (fuel), vehicle maintenance, and spare parts. As a result, many operators have opted to temporarily conduct their business outside the campus environment where they can better sustain their livelihoods.
“The statement suggesting that our operations were suspended by the Union is inaccurate,” the memo stated, emphasizing that the union cannot compel members to operate at a loss or dictate how they manage their personal businesses.
The Transport Services leadership also expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to students and the university community, acknowledging the vital role their services play in daily campus movement.
They further revealed that discussions are ongoing regarding a proposed fare adjustment, expressing optimism that a resolution would be reached soon through engagement with the SUG and other stakeholders.
The union concluded by urging all parties to ensure accurate dissemination of information to prevent further misunderstandings within the university community.
