Ryan Routh, 59, has been sentenced to life in prison plus seven years for attempting to assassinate Donald Trump at his Florida golf course in September 2024.
Judge Aileen Cannon handed down the sentence, citing the need "to protect the public from future crime" committed by Routh. Routh, who represented himself during the trial despite having no legal training, was convicted of attempted assassination, assaulting a federal officer, and firearms offenses.
The incident occurred on September 15, 2024, when a Secret Service agent spotted a rifle barrel poking from the bushes near Trump's golf course. Routh fled the scene but was arrested shortly after.
His planned attack came just two months after another assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania, where a bullet grazed Trump's ear.
