The Academic Staff Union of Universities' (ASUU) National Executive Council (NEC) will meet today to discuss the Federal Government's response to their demands.
Meanwhile, congresses of the various branches of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) met yesterday, to review the government’s offers.
According to a source that disclosed to IG KEYS Blog, the government's response to the ASUU's demands would be discussed at the crucial NEC meeting in Abuja, where a decision would be made regarding whether the strike should be suspended or extended indefinitely.
The IG Keys Blog discovered that branch chairmen were required to discuss the results of their respective congresses at the NEC meeting. The national body of ASUU had directed branch chairmen to convene emergency meetings to deliberate on the Federal Government’s response and decide the next line of action.
A national official of ASUU revealed that branch chairmen were mandated to summon an emergency congress, Monday, for members’ reactions to the government’s response.

In all ASUU branches, the emergency congress is held simultaneously. Keep in mind that the branch congresses voted in favor of the strike. At the various congresses, the branches are expected to accept or reject the government's response now that the renegotiation committee has presented it.
In a related development, ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, in a circular dated October 19, 2025, said the failure of government to satisfactorily attend to the union’s demands caused the activation of the ongoing warning strike.
He stated, "The government has returned to the negotiation table through its agents." In addition, notable Nigerians have been involved in the search for long-term solutions to the impasse. Piwuna said the National Strike Coordinating Committee (NSCC) met on Saturday, October 18th, 2025, at the National Secretariat to review developments around the ongoing action.
He said NSCC acknowledged that members nationwide were resolute in the implementation of the NEC’s resolution of September 28, 2025, in respect of the warning strike.
The Government's Renegotiation Team, led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, has presented the union with some offers and a documented response to our demands at the negotiation table. Our demands have been brought to the attention of relevant Senate committees, and they have met with the leadership of our union and made some decisions.
The mainstreaming of EAA, the confiscation of UNIABUJA land, the victimization of our members in KSU, LASU, and FUTO, as well as the release of third-party deductions, promotions in arrears, and mainstreaming of EAA are all examples of areas where progress is being made.

According to the principles of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), "engagements are continuing on all elements of the draft renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement." We commend the resilience and courage of our members in various branches, but we should remain united and steadfast in the few days ahead,” Piwuna stated.
