The President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Hon. Comr. Nwogu Bright Chinonyerem, has sparked campus-wide debate after publicly challenging the long-held notion that youth leadership is only relevant in the future.

Speaking on Rapid FM on Thursday, 26th March 2026, Hon. Comr. Nwogu stated, “Youths are the leaders of tomorrow, I personally don’t believe in it.” He argued that the phrase, often used to encourage young people, has inadvertently limited their recognition and participation in leadership roles today.
According to the SUG President, youths already possess the skills, vision, and capacity to lead, and delaying their inclusion to an indefinite “tomorrow” only stifles their potential.
He urged a shift in perspective that empowers young people to take active leadership roles now, both within the university and in broader societal contexts.
The remarks have generated conversations across the MOUAU campus, with students and stakeholders engaging in debates about the role of youth in leadership. While some commend the President’s bold stance, others have questioned the practical challenges young people face in attaining leadership positions.
