Tension escalated at Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, on Friday morning as students staged a protest over the disqualification of a presidential aspirant, Nicholas Emmanuel, from the ongoing Student Union Government (SUG) election for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The protest, which reportedly began around 9:00 a.m, saw a large number of students gather at strategic points across the campus, demanding justice and transparency in the electoral process. The aggrieved students expressed dissatisfaction with the decision of the SUG Electoral Committee (SUGECO), describing the disqualification as unfair and inconsistent with established guidelines.
Nicholas Emmanuel, a prominent aspirant in the presidential race, was disqualified on February 19, 2026, under circumstances that have since sparked widespread debate within the university community.
Supporters of the aspirant insist that the grounds for his disqualification are not clearly stated in the SUG Constitution or the official electoral guidelines.
