MOUAU To Spend N252m On Vehicles For Officials - Report

  

The provision for vehicle purchases is included alongside other high-value administrative and infrastructure-related projects. 

A review of Nigeria's budget for 2026 reveals that N252 million was set aside by Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Umudike, Abia State, for the purchase of three high-end vehicles for top officials. 

The vehicles are meant for the university's Pro-Chancellor and two principal officers, as detailed in the budget documents reviewed by media sources.

According to this allocation, the school will spend an average of N84 million on each vehicle. In the university's 2026 budget estimates, the provision for vehicle purchases is included alongside other high-value administrative and infrastructure-related projects. 

A deeper look at the documents reveals that N96 million has been allocated for the Chancellor's lodge's completion and furnishing. The Pro-Chancellor's lodge will also be finished and furnished with an additional N21 million. In addition to residential projects, the university's perimeter fencing, which is anticipated to cost N105 million in the fiscal year 2026, is included in the budget. The fencing project is included in the institution's annual capital expenditures. 

The university intends to carry out a number of road construction projects, some of which will extend beyond its immediate academic environment, as shown by the budget review. The Oloko–Amizi Road (Section II), which spans 7.5 kilometers and is located in Abia Central, has been allocated N350 million. 

The university's capital development plans for 2026 include this project. The construction of the Nkukunmiri Ala Ala–Okeuzo Oloko Road in the Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State has received an additional N210 million. The construction of the 4.5-kilometer Ogbuebulle Oloko Road, which is also in Abia State, is also planned to cost N140 million. The state's 1.1-kilometer Amuzu Road construction will cost an additional N140 million. Together, these road projects cost hundreds of millions of naira. They are listed alongside the university's most important administrative and capital expenditures, showing how much the university plans to spend in the 2026 budget year. 

A review of the university's financial statement for the year ending December 31, 2024 reveals that the institution spent a total of N773 million on honoraria and other stipends in the 2024 fiscal year, as previously reported by sources. The same financial statement showed that meals and refreshments cost an additional N240 million during the period. This brings the total cost of honoraria, stipends, and refreshments to N1.013 billion in 2024. 

UNN spent only N83 million on direct teaching and laboratory costs in the same year, which was significantly less than spending on non-academic items, despite its primary focus on teaching and research.
