According to the Lagos state police command, the officer who was attacked in a viral video was carrying out his official responsibilities, so he was wrongly accused of stealing.
The officer was seen in the video, which went viral on social media on Wednesday, with a swollen face and a bleeding nose while he was surrounded by people shouting "ole" (thief).
As the crowd got closer, another officer was seen trying to help. Abimbola Adebisi, Lagos police spokesperson, described the narrative accompanying the video as “false and misleading”.
She noted that the officer, attached to the Lagos state taskforce, was enforcing a ban on illegal parking along Brown street, Oshodi, when the confrontation occurred.

After the officer stopped a car that was trying to park improperly, the situation got worse. The officer accidentally discharged his weapon during the altercation, resulting in debris striking onlookers. Adebisi stated, "The motorist became violent, resulting in a heated confrontation."
During the incident, the Inspector accidentally fired shots into the road, causing some people to be hit by the impact debris. The Inspector was violently attacked and suffered serious injuries as the crowd immediately gathered.
The Inspector has been subjected to disciplinary actions in line with established police procedures for his unprofessional conduct.
In a similar vein, thirteen (13) suspects who were seen assaulting the officer in the viral video have been arrested, are currently in police custody, and will be prosecuted once the investigations are finished.
