NAFDAC Set To Ban Sale And Production Of Alcoholic Beverages

NAFDAC has enacted a total ban on the production and sale of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small plastic or glass bottles of less than 200ml, effective December 2025.

This decision, which follows a directive from the Nigerian Senate and endorsement from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, aims to protect public health by reducing alcohol availability to vulnerable groups, including children, adolescents, and young adults.

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC's Director-General, clarified that the ban is intended to prioritize the health and future of Nigerian youth over immediate economic benefits, grounding the initiative in scientific evidence and public health needs.

In support of the ban, NAFDAC plans to collaborate with various agencies, including the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and the National Orientation Agency (NOA), to launch nationwide campaigns that will highlight the health and social risks associated with sachet and small bottle alcohol consumption.
