Tragedy, as 10 dies, others hospitalized in South East road crash

Ten persons lost their lives on Wednesday in two separate fatal road accidents that occurred along the Ozalla/4-Corner axis of the dual-carriage Enugu/Port-Harcourt Expressway in Enugu State.

These incidents were confirmed by the State Police Command, revealing that ten persons were hospitalised from the two incidents.

Daniel Ndukwe, the Command's spokesman, said in a statement that the first incident, a crash involving multiple vehicles on the Enugu inward-bound lane, occurred around 9 a.m. Ndukwe explained that a Howo truck bearing the name Visco Investment Global and carrying white cement bags was traveling from Aba, Abia State, to Abuja when it collided with a Toyota Corolla trying to pass another truck traveling the same route.

He went on to say that the collision also involved a Daihatsu Hijet minibus and a Foton bus that were both traveling in one direction. The police image maker emphasized that the truck head and the Toyota Corolla car caught fire, killing five people inside. A medical professional caring for the victims also confirmed that a passenger in the minibus had died. “Similarly, at about 3 p.m. on the same road, another fatal crash occurred.

This time, a tricycle and a Sino truck from Global Investment were involved. “The truck, loaded with cement and traveling in only one direction from Garriki Enugu to Nenwe in Aninri LGA, collided with the tricycle on the same Enugu inward-bound lane, resulting in the deaths of its four occupants. They were rushed to the hospital but later confirmed dead.“

Ten other persons, injured in the separate crashes, are currently receiving medical attention,” Ndukwe said.

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa mourned the tragic loss of lives and commiserated the families of the deceased.
